Now that we are back and no one has classes until the end of January, the coaches and I decided to move our practice time to the morning so our girls can get more rest during the day. After discussing with the men’s head coach we decided to have practice at 10:00 am while the men’s team went after us at 1:00. This first practice of the month focused mainly on conditioning. These girls had well over 2 weeks off and we have no idea if they even worked on their game over break. We decided to focus less on playing basketball and more on getting back into game shape. We are a team that likes to run, so if we can’t it makes the game harder for us. After we got the girls a good run-in, we had individuals for the last hour. This is where we break them up into groups according to their skillset and position to work on their game. I work with the guards because that’s the position I played so I’m most comfortable with it. I decided to keep the conditioning going and make the guards work on full-court ball handling. The first half of the semester we averaged almost 20 turnovers a game and I want to make sure our guards limit that and control the ball. After individuals were over we let the men’s team start their practice and headed to the cafeteria for team lunch. Today was Philly cheesesteak day and I am not a fan of cafeteria food so the other assistant coach and I decided to go to Chic Fil A. We ate and mingled around the sports center until it was time for team dinner with the men’s team at the President of SLC’s house. She made chicken, caesar salad, pasta, and many choices for dessert. Since this is my first year here, it was great getting to know her and the fellas on the men’s team. After dinner was over, both teams headed to their residences while the coaches went home.
